Freedom Northwest Credit Union made our dreams a reality when we thought those dreams were going to die. My husband and I had our eyes on a particular farm for five years. When were we blessed with the opportunity to get it, we learned how hard it is to be a square peg in a round-hole world. My husband is self-employed and involved in a family business and the banks struggled to get a handle on grasping our financial situation. The property was also outside the norm for banks; more than 10 acres which is the point at which most conventional banks stop lending, but not a large income-producing farm, old farmhouse, railroad tracks through one side. We started the process with a certain bank in July. At the beginning of September we were told we were conditionally approved if we satisfied three points. We pulled together what was needed to satisfy those three points. At the beginning of October, we were given six points which needed satisfied, including items we were told at the beginning we did not need. I was so furious. We were living in a camper trailer with our four children waiting to close on the property as we had optimistically moved out of our rental the end of July.
That’s when I finally reached out to FNWCU. We had 20 percent down on a farm property someone wanted to sell to us and could afford the mortgage. I had been afraid to switch lenders because I thought it would take several weeks to close as it had with the bank. But not with FNWCU. We have the approval and necessary paperwork in about two weeks. The only thing that delayed us from moving in at that point was the paralegal who handled our closing was on vacation for a few days. Thanks to FNWCU we finally were able to move into our forever home! How I wish I had gone with them after the first sign the round-hole bank was struggling with our square pegs. I now recommend them to anyone, especially those who don’t perfectly fit the mold the banks set.
Since getting our mortgage, I have continued to appreciate the service of FNWCU. Every time I call, I get to talk to an actual, live person who can either help me directly or knows exactly who can. When engineers determined our house was high enough from the creek it was out of the flood zone and therefore we did not need to pay flood insurance–another point the bank had struggled with–Carol was so easy to work with and exceptionally prompt in getting me the documentation needed to get a full refund on the insurance we had been forced to pay upfront due to outdated flood maps; $2,400. It made things so much easier to talk to a person who made me feel as if they really cared about what I was going through and wanted me to win.
I am so glad FNWCU set up their ATM in Colfax or I may never had found them. FNWCU was a blessing that helped us into our forever farm and the people there have never been anything less than angels since. It is a God-send!
Like I said, I can’t say enough about how great FNWCU has been. Always being treated with dignity is one of their traits I value the most. Seven years ago we fell on hard times and almost faced foreclosure. It was a turning point for us and we refused to ever be in that situation again, so we got out of debt and got our act together. The first bank we looked at, however, didn’t see it that way and the loan lady pretty much made us feel like white trash for even trying to get a loan despite how long it had been since that time. The bank that actually worked with us was better, but when it looked like we didn’t fit their mold, we weren’t as important to them. Just the kindness we have received from FNWCU is enough reason for me to want to promote them to others.
